This is Iyal. He is like many other children in this world who have done nothing wrong but suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. FAS is the result of alcohol consumption while pregnant. Its effects can cause physical defects or "abnormalities" in personality. It almost always leads to being mentally handicapped. These children need extra help in the classroom. I have learned about FAS through my Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners, but it has me wondering, how can I, as a teacher, use technology to help students with this type of special need?
This is a website that was recommended as having great resources for teachers who need to learn more about FAS. The one area that is not covered is what technology can do for children who have FAS. I think educational research could benefit from a long-term case study regarding a child with FAS that is assisted in some way by a computer in the classroom. If nothing else, it would be interesting!
Assistive Technology is a site that offers some resources on technological resources for special needs children. It may be worth checking out. Technology is being used more commonly in mainstream classrooms. Entire schools are equipping their students with their own laptops. I believe technology is also going to be the answer in helping our students with special needs.
